‘Call Me Miss Cleo’ Doc Tells Story Behind the Story of the Mysterious TV Psychic | WATCH

*The late Miss Cleo and her psychic hotline were quite a sensation in the 1990s. But what became of her and the hotline? How did she finish from the limelight so soon? HBO Max is set to release a new documentary to look into her life.

Titled “Call Me Miss Cleo,” the documentary aims to detail “the truth” about this mysterious TV psychic who came from nowhere and vanished to nowhere. HBO Max released a trailer on December 1. The streaming service also stated that the documentary would chronicle “the rise, fall, and reinvention” of Miss Cleo.

Real name Youree Dell Harris, Miss Cleo called herself a voodoo priestess and regularly appeared on Psychic Readers Network where she gained a cult following. She was soon a household name. She became especially famous for her trademark line “call me now!” which she uttered with a Jamaican accent.

But everything took a nosedive not long after. The owners of the Psychic Readers Network were, in 2002, charged by the Federal Trade Commission with defrauding customers who called the company’s 1-900-numbers for paid psychic readings. However, the voodoo priestess herself wasn’t charged.

Miss Cleo probably took this opportunity to vanish from the scene, never to be heard from again. And then the truth began to emerge. Contrary to TV infomercials’ assertions that she was a shaman from Jamaica, the truth finally came out that she was actually born in Los Angeles and had been an actress. So, she had been acting the part of a voodoo priestess for the Psychic Readers Network? Yep.

HBO Max’s official description of the doc states, “The film explores the many layers behind a complicated and charismatic figure. Revisiting an era of corded phones and 1-900-numbers, ‘Call Me Miss Cleo’ ultimately reveals the truth behind the ever-enigmatic woman who took TV by storm, only to abruptly disappear from public consciousness.”

“Miss Cleo” passed away in 2006. The documentary features some of her past interviews as well as testimonials from people who were close to her. Actresses Raven-Symoné and MAdtv alum Debra Wilson also speak about the voodoo priestess.

In a statement, Sarah Aubrey, head of original content at HBO Max, said Miss Cleo was such an iconic figure to fans and believers nationwide, but her story behind the camera remained an enigma.

“We are excited at the opportunity to help tell her true story in ‘Call Me Miss Cleo’ through the testimonials of those closest to the mysterious TV personality,” she added.

“Call Me Miss Cleo” will premiere December 15 on HBO Max.
