*Boxing promoter Bob Arum believes Mike Tyson has “no chance” of beating Jake Paul in their upcoming fight, citing the significant 31-year age difference.
If sanctioned, the fight would set a record for the largest age gap between fighters in an official bout. As GBN reports, concerns have been raised about the risks Tyson faces at 58, with promoter Eddie Hearn calling the fight “dangerous” and “irresponsible.” Despite criticism, organizers expect a sell-out event, with Netflix hosting it as the streamer’s first live boxing event.
Arum, who once promoted Tyson, worries for the safety of the former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.
“The answer is no [Tyson can’t beat Paul],” he said.
“A 58-year-old guy, no matter how good they were, no matter how athletic they were, are not gonna be able to fight,” he added.
“You can’t throw punches like you’re supposed to, you can’t do a lot of things,” Arum continued.
“I hope Mike doesn’t get hurt, but I really give him relatively no chance,” he said. “You lose that muscle memory as you get older.”
The fight was initially set for July 20, but it was postponed after Tyson experienced an ulcer flare-up while on a plane. He wants the rescheduled fight against Paul to go down between October and December.
“I want to thank my fans around the world for their support and understanding during this time. Unfortunately, due to my ulcer flare-up, I have been advised by my doctor to lighten my training for a few weeks to rest and recover,” said Tyson in a message to fans.
“My body is in better overall shape than it has been since the 1990s, and I will be back to my full training schedule soon,” he continued. “Jake Paul, this may have bought you some time, but in the end, you will still be knocked out and out of boxing for good. I appreciate everyone’s patience and can’t wait to deliver an unforgettable performance later this year.”
Jake Paul, 27, responded: “My fans know I don’t want to face Iron Mike at anything but his best, but let there be no mistake – when he steps into the ring with me, I will be ready to claim my W with a sensational finish. Paul vs Tyson will be one for the ages, and I promise to bring my best for this once-in-a-lifetime matchup.”
