*We spoke to Aidan Turner and Nafessa Williams about their intriguing roles in the Hulu new original series “Rivals” starring David Tennant.
“Rivals” is based on the iconic novel by Dame Jilly Cooper, and this eight-part drama brings to life the scandalous, high-stakes world of 1980s British television. Turner takes on the role of Declan O’Hara, a passionate broadcaster determined to take down a corrupt media mogul, while Williams portrays the sharp and ambitious Cameron Cook, who finds herself entangled in a love triangle that threatens to upend both her career and personal life.
Here’s the official logline: “Set against the backdrop of the drama, excess, and shocking antics of the power-grabbing social elite of 1980s England, “Rivals” delves headfirst into the ruthless world of independent television in 1986.”
“Every episode is going to feel encapsulated and has its own tone…But I think from four, we start to see what these characters are after where they’re going how badly they want it, and what they’re willing to sacrifice to get it,” Turner told EURweb exclusively.
“I think there’s a slight tonal shift from the midpoint,” he continued. “Every character is after something and we’re going to watch them get it. And when some of them do get it, it’s do they want to hang on to it? So it’s high stakes. It’s sink or swim with these guys.”
Williams added, “… everybody has an agenda. You may find as it twists, like Aiden says, maybe around the fourth, fifth episode where you start to see it become transactional. There’s a question of, is this worth it? How bad do I want it? What lengths am I willing to go to actually manifest this thing? I think at the helm of all of it, they’re competitive and they want what they want. And by any means necessary, Cameron is going to go and get what she wants. She’s a woman who knows how to do that.”
