*We spoke with director Brandon Espy and actor Elvis Nolasco about their new horror film “Mr. Crocket,” now streaming on Hulu.
The movie is based on Espy’s 2022 short of the same name, created for Hulu’s Bite Size Halloween series. Co-written by Espy and Carl Reid, “Mr. Crocket” is part of WorthenBrooks’ first-look horror slate with Hulu Originals. The film tells the chilling story of a 1993 children’s show host who emerges from TV screens to abduct children, leaving a trail of gruesome murders behind.
Here’s the official synopsis: In 1993, a mysterious children’s show host, Mr. Crocket, magically emerges from television sets to kidnap young children, brutally slaying their parents in the process. After Mr. Crocket snatches her son, one determined mother embarks on a perilous quest to track down the demonic entertainer and rescue her boy.
We asked Elvis to share his thoughts on portraying a character linked to a children’s show that takes a dark turn, and how he prepared for such a sinister role.
“I did take my time to be able to do some research, not specifically on other horror films, but on the time period, doing research about family and being able to take my time to write in silence and a quiet space. What to me was Mr. Crockett? How did he come about? What was his upbringing? And in that process, a lot was discovered,” he explained. “Being able to have a private moment with Mr. Crockett and put myself in a place where experimentally, I am going to tap into what this guy’s public persona is and what his private persona is.”
“Once you know the trauma of the character, you have to believe it and go full force. And being able to have a director like Brandon on board, I had that freedom,” Nolasco continued.
“I wanted to make sure that I had no kind of influences when it came to Mr. Crockett because I saw Mr. Crockett on the page as being something fresh, as being something that hasn’t been seen and being something that I wanted to create from an unfulfilled need of the character more than from any other influences,” Nolasco added. “I do love horror films. I’ve watched plenty of them, but I didn’t want to bring any of that to this.”
Elsewhere in our exclusive with Espy and Nolasco, they shared insights into the creative process, the inspiration behind the eerie character, and what audiences can expect from this spine-tingling thriller. Watch the clip below.
“Mr. Crocket” debuted on Hulu on Oct. 11.
