Phifer portrays Max Bomer, an ex-convict at a crossroads, seeking purpose and redemption. He recognizes similar struggles in the life of Michael Duffy Duffield, a homeless veteran played by Grillo.
The two form an unlikely partnership, embarking on a journey that leads them into the heart of LA’s crime world.

In an exclusive interview with EUR, he discussed Max’s mid-life crisis, the exploration of purpose, and the importance of family in the narrative.
“Max is navigating a transitional period in his life, contemplating his past decisions and seeking a higher purpose,” said Phifer. He also described Max’s journey as an awakening. “He’s living life the way he has, not that he was a bad person, he just made bad decisions. Max is searching for his purpose, grappling with questions about his existence, and contemplating how he can contribute to his community and family.”
As the characters delve into the dangerous world of underground fight clubs, Phifer reflects on his interests, expressing a personal fascination with the fighting world. He mentions his admiration for MMA and boxing. However, he emphasizes bringing light to situations rather than causing harm.
Family plays a crucial role in Max’s life, providing him with a sense of purpose and anchoring him amidst the chaos of the crime world. “Family brings vulnerability but ultimately saves Max, giving him something to fight for and come home to,” he explained. The actor highlights the universal theme of searching for purpose and the impact of familial bonds on individuals facing adversity.
Phifer’s attraction to the role of Max lies in the challenge of humanizing the character. He emphasizes the importance of presenting characters relatable and empathetic, allowing audiences to connect with their struggles and journeys.
