*Sony Pictures and Martin Lawrence are developing a sequel to his ‘90s buddy comedy “Blue Streak.”
Deadline reports that Cole Maliska is writing the screenplay for the film that is in early development. Lawrence is producing through his production company Run Tel Dat with Robert Lawrence, Rae Proctor, Stacy Lyles, and Toby Jaffe.
Lawrence starred in the 1999 film as “a jewel thief who tries to retrieve a diamond he left at a police station, whereupon he disguises himself as a detective and gets paired with a real policeman to investigate burglaries,” per the synopsis. Directed by Les Mayfield, the movie also stars Luke Wilson, Dave Chappelle, Peter Greene, Nicole Ari Parker, and William Forsythe. The original film grossed nearly $120 million globally.
There is no talent currently attached to the reboot, according to Deadline.
Lawrence most recently starred alongside Will Smith in Sony’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” which grossed more than $403M worldwide.
We reported earlier that the comedian intends to revive his iconic TV character Martin Payne in collaboration with Marvin Peart’s WonderHill Studios for the hour-long drama series “Young Martin.”
Lawrence played the adult version of Martin on the beloved sitcom “Martin” from 1992-1997. The cast reunited earlier at the 75th Emmy Awards in January. According to Deadline, the upcoming new show will follow a teenage Payne who’s “navigating the complexities of transitioning from youth to adulthood” while in Detroit. The premiere date for the drama has not yet been announced.
“Out of all the hit shows during the 90’s, there was only one Martin — a show that defined culture and positivity. Martin reflected a real group of friends from our community that wound up on TV screens all over the world,” WonderHill CEO Marvin Peart stated.
“I respected and revered Martin Lawrence for creating Martin Payne and what he did for African Americans on television in front and behind the camera,” Marvin continued. “In many ways, he influenced my path in the entertainment industry and it’s an honor to partner with Martin and his younger self and share him with the next generation of fans.”
