*Martin Lawrence intends to revive his iconic TV character Martin Payne in collaboration with Marvin Peart’s WonderHill Studios for the hour-long drama series “Young Martin.”
Lawrence played the adult version of Martin on the beloved sitcom “Martin” from 1992-1997. The cast reunited earlier at the 75th Emmy Awards in January.
According to Deadline, the upcoming new show will follow a teenage Payne who’s “navigating the complexities of transitioning from youth to adulthood” while in Detroit. The premiere date for the drama has not yet been announced.
“Out of all the hit shows during the 90’s, there was only one Martin — a show that defined culture and positivity. Martin reflected a real group of friends from our community that wound up on TV screens all over the world,” WonderHill CEO Marvin Peart stated.
“I respected and revered Martin Lawrence for creating Martin Payne and what he did for African Americans on television in front and behind the camera,” Marvin continued. “In many ways, he influenced my path in the entertainment industry and it’s an honor to partner with Martin and his younger self and share him with the next generation of fans.”
Martin recently addressed rumors concerning his health after an awkward moment during the “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” premiere.
“I’m fine. I’m in God’s hands. I’m blessed,” the comedian said during his appearance on “Ebro in the Morning” last month.
“You know I’m glad to be waking up every day and everything,” Lawrence continued. “No need for people to be concerned. I’m healthy as hell. Stop the rumors!”
His comments come after fans expressed concern for the actor over a curious incident at the “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” premiere.” At the event, Will Smith, Lawrence’s co-star, had to hold his hand and help him walk as he appeared to struggle to greet fans. This unexpected moment sparked worry about Lawrence’s health and well-being among his supporters.
In a viral clip on X (formally Twitter), Will has a tight grip on Martin’s hand, and some fans believe he appears drunk or suffering from health/medical issues. Watch the moment via the YouTube clip below.
