*Michigan Judge J. Cedric Simpson is making headlines once again, and this time he’s gaining attention for sentencing Darrell Lester Jarrell to a year in prison for contempt of court after his profane outburst during a pre-trial hearing.
Jarrell, who was facing trespassing charges, reacted angrily when offered additional time to consult with his attorney, directing profanities at the judge, Daily Mail reports. Simpson sentenced Jarrell to 93 days in jail for each outburst, totaling 558 days.
This incident follows a previous viral moment involving Judge Simpson and defendant Corey Harris, who had a suspended license, and appeared in court via Zoom while driving. Simpson revoked Harris’s bond after realizing he was driving without a license.
During Jarrell’s hearing, he was given the option to reschedule his court date to allow time to consult with his lawyer. He became frustrated by the idea of the case being delayed, saying, “I’m ready to leave this state as soon as possible.”
He continued, “What’s the hold up? It’s trespassing. I can technically leave and you guys can issue a warrant as long I don’t return, you can kiss my ass.”
Simpson then responds, “No. No. No. You don’t come up in here,” but Jarrell interrupts to repeatedly tell the judge “F*** you.”
The judge sentenced Jarrell to 93 days for each outburst, resulting in a total of 558 days in jail.
The defendant in the next case, Keith Jenkins, watched the entire dramatic scene unfold via Zoom, visibly shocked. Watch the moment via the YouTube clip below.
