*Joey Badass said his father canceled his Starz subscriptions after the actor’s character died in “Power Book III: Raising Kanan.” (SPOILERS ahead).

Joey portrays the character Unique on the show. In season 3, Unique’s brother, Ronnie (Grantham Coleman), beat him to death in Episode 5, and fans have since demanded the return of the beloved character. Many threatened to stop watching the show, and Joey’s father protested by canceling the cable channel.

“He’s a big fan of the show. He called me after he’s seen Episode 6 and he’s like, ‘It’s been two weeks and they still ain’t find the body? I’m canceling my subscription,’” Joey told Complex. “And I thought he was playing and so he called me the next week after watching Episode 7. He’s like, ‘Yeah, I just canceled my subscription.’”

Meanwhile, Joey’s character reappears at the end of the Season 3 finale.

Joey said the reaction to Unique’s departure “was an eye-opener for me.”

“I always knew that Unique was somewhat of a fan favorite, but I think that became very evident and clear with the event of his hypothetical death,” he continued.

“I received a lot of flowers and praise for what I’ve done with this character. So that was cool to see, knowing that I was coming back the whole time,” the actor explained to Complex.

When the third season kicked off in December 2023, Joey Bada$$ told EURweb exclusively that he’s “definitely excited for people to see the way Grantham portrays Ronnie’s character because I think he adds a whole new element and layer to this show.”

Ronnie is Unique’s older brother, a former inmate whose “stoic demeanor belies a shocking ruthlessness,” per the news release.

“There’s nobody in the universe who’s like him,” Joey said, “and I think that it’s going to catch a lot of people off guard. I know for sure I didn’t think that this is what Unique’s older brother would look like or would be like, you know what I’m saying?”

“Power Book III: Raising Kanan” premiered December 1, and series star MeKai Curtis told EUR at the time that his character attempts “to rebuild that in a certain way, but with a new spin.”

“He’s going to have to deal with obstacles and re-directions and truth that he didn’t see coming and truth that he did see coming,” Curtis said of Kanan.
