‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ Star Confirms Sequel Is in the Works

*The star of “Five Nights at Freddy’s” says a sequel is in the works after the first film’s massive success.

The supernatural horror film from Blumhouse is adapted from the popular video game series of the same name.

The film follows a troubled security guard (Josh Hutcherson) as he begins working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. While spending his first night on the job, he realizes the night shift at Freddy’s won’t be so easy to make it through, per the studio’s press release.

The first film debuted on Peacock in October 2023 and features Elizabeth Lail (You, Mack & Rita), Piper Rubio (Holly & Ivy, Unstable), Kat Conner Sterling (We Have a Ghost, 9-1-1), with Mary Stuart Masterson (Blindspot, Fried Green Tomatoes), and Matthew Lillard (Good Girls, Scream).

Hutcherson told Variety that fans can expect a second chapter as “they’re in the process right now of nailing down the story, and they want to get going as soon as possible,” he said.

“Obviously, the fans are amazing and die hard. For me to be a part of it was so cool and phenomenal,” Hutcherson added.

“We hoped it would connect with audiences,” he continued. “But I don’t think that anybody, even on our side of things, expected it to really connect the way that it did. I’m dying to get back on set. Emma Tammi, our director, was fantastic, and it was such a fun world to play in. I’m excited to see what they are doing next.”

In 2021, producer Jason Blum spoke to Collider about the challenges of developing the script for the first film.

“The film is really tough to crack. We’ve written multiple scripts, and we’ve got where we’re threading a needle, which is doing justice to Five Nights at Freddy’s and making Scott [Cawthon] happy,” he said, We Got This Covered reports.

“The only way that we would go about it is giving Scott … I don’t want to do something that Scott doesn’t like. Let me say that a different way. I don’t have the right to do anything Scott doesn’t like. Basically, Scott has kind of like the equivalent of final cut,” he shared. “And it’s taken longer than I hoped to get the right story. But we’re a long ways from giving up. And I’m confident, eventually, I will figure it out.”

Hutcherson is good friends with actress Jennifer Lawrence as the pair co-starred in “Hunger Games.” When “Five Nights at Freddy’s” premiered last fall, she texted him to celebrate as her film, “No Hard Feelings” dropped on the same weekend.

“Jen texted me when “Freddy’s’ came out,” Hutcherson told Variety. “She was like, ‘My movie’s #1 on Netflix, and your’s is #1 at the box office! Let’s go!’ I was like, ‘I love you!’”
