*With a successful music career, stint on Broadway, and loyal fanbase, life is good for Fantasia Barrino.
The North Carolina vocalist, who is receiving praise for her performance as Celie in the remake of “The Color Purple“ is living well.The kicker is she hasn’t forgotten about life before and just after she became a household name.
With Celie, Barrino sees a parallel as they both endured years of struggle before their days were a lot brighter.
“Celie and I have a lot in common when it comes to family situations, losing things, and feeling ugly and unseen…This feels like God’s promises, they’re finally coming to power,” the “Free Yourself” entertainer told People. “I’m a fan of the Book of Job in the Bible. Job lost everything. And so did I.”
The Color Purple” remake, released on Christmas Day, has found good fortune since it arrived in theaters, with #18.2 million made on its first day at the box office. In addition to Barrino, the film boasts an all-star roster comprised of Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brook, Colman Domingo, H.E.R., Corey Hawkins, Halle Bailey, Jon Batiste, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Ciara, David Alan Grier, and Louis Gossett
Barrino’s success with “The Color Purple” remake, as well as her portrayal of Celie in the Broadway adaptation of the film, is the latest chapter to come after getting on the public radar after winning “American Idol“ in 2004. Although she gained fans and successfully launched her music career, The Jasmine Brand notes the drama that came once Barrino’s life changed post-Idol.
“It wasn’t easy…I lost a lot,” she revealed. “I lost everything.”
Barrino’s struggles generated headlines and conversation. Among those contributing to the drama was her father. In 2006, the patriarch sued his famous daughter for $10 million over her portrayal of him in her memoir “Life Is Not a Fairy Tale.” The lawsuit wasn’t the only issue Barrino battled. As a newbie in the music industry, the songstress contended with people on her team taking advantage of her often. The experience was a hard lesson learned for Barrino while navigating the rough waters of the business.
“You have to become a businesswoman and you link up with great business partners, but it doesn’t have a lot to do with love. It took me a long time to figure that out,” the 39-year-old vocalist said while detailing her lack of knowledge when it came to handling business beyond just making and recording songs.
“I didn’t know anything about contracts…I didn’t know anything about checking your money and making sure every day your stuff was where it was supposed to be. I just trusted and believed everybody that came into my life.”
Fortunately, Barrino was able to rebound and set things so she doesn’t repeat her past mistakes. If the reaction to “The Color Purple” remake is an indication, 2024 looks to be a great year to come with more success to follow.
