*Bronny James journey to greatness in the NBA is taking a slight detour with a ‘planned’ shift to its G League.
According to Deadspin, more playing time is on the horizon for James as he put in time with the Los Angeles Lakers in their games against the Detroit Pistons and Memphis Grizzlies. Starting Saturday, the young sports star will begin a new chapter in his pro ball career when he suits up with the Lakers’ G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers.
Although it may look like an overload for James, the frequent switch up is part of a bigger plan the Lakers have the athlete to step out of the large legendary shadow of his father, LeBron James.
“The plan for Bronny to move between the Lakers and South Bay has always been the plan since Day 1,” Los Angeles coach JJ Redick confessed to Deadspin, revealing that LeBron is in on the whole thing. “(General manager) Rob (Pelinka) and I have talked about that. LeBron’s talked about that.”
The Lakers’ Bronny strategy follows a history making moment involving the rookie and LeBron when they kicked off LA’s season Oct. 22 with a 110-103 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Prior to the moment, no father and son ever played together in an NBA game.
Days later, on Nov. 6, Bronny generated solo headlines putting up his first points as an NBA player just 40 miles north of his birthplace, Akron, Ohio. Despite his personal milestone, the Lakers came up short with a 134-110 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Now that he’s a fixture in the pro basketball scene, Bronny is a marked man in G League. As Deadspin noted, his last name won’t prevent the competition from featuring him on their personal highlight reel with testing him and his skills on the court to see if he really lives up to the hype.
Stay tuned to see how good Bronny really is.
