*Teddy Pendergrass‘ widow, Joan Pendergrass, has set the record straight after Tyrese Gibson‘s Voltron Entertainment sued her for at least $1 million in damages over the abandoned rights to the late crooner’s life story.
Joan asked a court to dismiss all claims brought by Gibson’s production company, according to court papers seen by reporters. Gibson’s lawsuit alleges that his company secured the rights to Pendergrass’ life story in 2011. At that time, Joan agreed to give Tyrese the rights to a book and a movie in exchange for him investing in the projects. He claims the singer’s widow signed off on the deal.
Tyrese moved to court, claiming in the court papers that his production company has invested $450k in the project and has worked on it for nearly a decade. But in 2022, Tyrese says Joan refused to sign paperwork to extend the deal, reports Radar Online.
Meanwhile, Joan has denied the allegations, instead bringing in a new twist to the story. While she says she did have a deal in place with Voltron, things changed along the way. She admitted that indeed the initial agreement was signed in 2011, but then Tyrese’s Voltron Entertainment assigned all of its rights under the Option Agreement to Warner Bros in 2019, in essence “making Warner Bros. the successor-in-interest to Voltron concerning the option agreement and Voltron no longer a party to the option agreement.”
In other words, Tyrese sold his rights to Warner Bros, therefore Tyrese nor his company has any part in the deal now.
“Voltron’s claims are barred because Voltron seeks to enforce an unenforceable agreement to agree,” Joan says in her filed response to the lawsuit.
If what she says is true, then this will be a tough legal battle for Tyrese to win.
