Marlon Wayans Talks Journey to Accepting His Trans Son | Watch

*Marlon Wayans is opening up about his trans son Kai in a new interview on “The Breakfast Club” radio show. 

“I talk about the transition, not their transition, but my transition as a parent going from ignorance and denial to complete unconditional love and acceptance,” Wayans said his eldest child, 23, who was born female but now identifies as a male with They/Them pronouns. “And I think there’s a lot of parents out there that need to have that message, and I know I’m dealing with it. It was a very painful situation for me,” he added. 

The father of two is sharing his journey to help families become more accepting of their trans children.

“They know I love them,” Wayans said of Kai. “They see me trying. They’re like, ‘I’m happy.'”

The comedian said he’s all about respecting the “wishes” of his children, including Kai’s 21-year-old brother Shawn.

“I gotta respect their wishes, right, and as a parent, I just want my kids to be free,” Wayans told The Breakfast Club hosts.

“I want them to be free in spirit, free in thought, free to be themselves. The more you know yourself, the more you can govern yourself, the more you live your truth, the happier your existence,” he continued. “So, if they can’t get that in a household with their father and their mother, how the f— do I send them out into the world with that kind of confidence?”

Wayans added, “I’m just so proud of them for being them.”
