*We caught up with beloved veteran actress Loretta Devine to speak about her new role in the dramatic comedy, “A Snowy Day in Oakland,” which hits theaters nationwide on March 17.
Written and directed by Kim Bass, the film boasts a star-studded cast, including Nicole Ari Parker, Deon Cole, Kimberly Elise, Tony Plana, Michael Jai White, Keith David, Arden Myrin, Evan Ross, and Claudia Zevallos.
“This magical-realism comedy,” per a news release, “explores important themes in the black communities such as navigating relationships and family, black-owned business owners and the power of such a community, while also addressing mental health within the Black narrative itself.”
Per the official synopsis: “Nicole Ari Parker stars as LaTrice, a therapist who decides to end a stalled romance with her longtime, high-profile, psychiatrist, boyfriend/business partner. She moves into a predominately African-American and psychologically ignored neighborhood and navigates her practice, her relationships and her sanity with the town’s biggest personalities Davis (Cole) Jeanette (Devine), and Theona (Elise). Her private practice is located in a vacant, street-front office space in the middle of a small, commercial block located across the bay in Oakland.”
“A Snowy Day in Oakland,” the synopsis continues, “explores meaningful themes including navigating relationships and family, Entrepreneurship, as well as the importance of exploring mental health issues within the black community.”
As Yahoo reports, Bass drew upon his family’s move from Utica to Frankfort as a child as inspiration for Parker’s character.
“It literally was inspired by my childhood in Utica, and then the seemingly overnight move to Frankfort,” said Bass. “It’s just that concept of being taken out of your neighborhood and brought to a brand new place.”
Bass described “A Snowy Day in Oakland” as “an important and impactful story” that will be served to the audience “in an entertaining manner.”
