Larry Buford: Love and Sin: Both Are the Answers!

*Some of us may remember the old Certs commercial of the ’60s: Two people debating “Certs is a candy mint; Certs is a breath mint” and the announcer says, “Stop! You’re both right, Certs is two, two, two mints in one!”

Likewise, some are asking today “Why do bad things happen to good people, and good things seem to happen to bad people.” It reminds me of that old R&B song by 100 Proof (Aged In Soul) “Everything Good Is Bad.” The chorus “Everything good is bad, and everything bad is good” seems to be the order of the day.

Often, we hear people say, “If God is such a loving God, why does He allow bad things to happen?” The answer: He loves us so much that He gave us free will and He won’t intervene unless we include Him in our affairs. The other answer: Because of our sin, because we choose deceit over honesty; hate over love; and lies over truth, we find ourselves in a world of darkness and confusion.

In our world where we are bombarded and saturated with misinformation and disinformation, who or what are we listening to? It’s like the depiction of an angel on one shoulder speaking in our ear, and the devil doing the same on the other. Our actions will show which one we’re listening to.

Do you know that God’s commandments are such that no human can keep them all; that if we’re guilty of one, we’re guilty of them all? That’s why we needed a savior, Jesus Christ (also called Emmanuel meaning “God with us”). Have you also noticed never-ending conflicts around the world; racial inequality; human trafficking; the war on drugs; corruption, and other mounting social ills? God is letting us know that the poor in morality will always be with us in the human condition that we’re in, but He offered us hope when He gave the world His only begotten son, Jesus, the Light of the world. It will never be a completely perfect world until Jesus returns, but we must strive to make it a more perfect world to live in love, peace, and harmony until He comes. God is watching!

Here are lyrics from the song “In Times Like These”:

In times like these, you need a Savior,

In times like these you need an anchor;

Be very sure, be very sure,

Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

This Rock is Jesus, Yes He’s the One,

This Rock is Jesus, the only One;

Be very sure, be very sure,

Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!
