Lab-Grown Chicken Coming to Restaurants and Grocery Stores | Video

As CNN reports, “lab-grown meat — or cultivated or cell-based meat — is meat that is developed from animal cells and grown, with the help of nutrients like amino acids, in massive bioreactors,” the outlet writes.

Production takes place in a facility that looks a lot like a brewery, according to CNN.

Good Meat’s protein “looks a lot like a minced chicken,” when extracted, said Andrew Noyes, head of global communications and public affairs at Good Meat parent company Eat Just, per CNN.

To make cultivated meat, “energy use needs are high,” said Bruce Friedrich, president and founder of the Good Food Institute, CNN reports.

Good Meat and another California company, Upside Foods, received approval this week to ship the lab-grown meat to restaurants, and eventually grocery stores, SandraRose.com.

In April, the FDA approved lab-grown meat. Animal activists are over the moon about this because it means carnivores can eat meat without farmers having to slaughter animals.

The lab-grown meat is not considered vegetarian.

The US Department of Agriculture claims chicken grown from cultivated cells is both safe and legal for sale.

“This announcement that we’re now able to produce and sell cultivated meat in the United States is a major moment for our company, the industry and the food system,” said Josh Tetrick, co-founder and CEO of Good Meat, in a press release.

“We have been the only company selling cultivated meat anywhere in the world since we launched in Singapore in 2020, and now it’s approved to sell to consumers in the world’s largest economy. We appreciate the rigor and thoughtfulness that both the FDA and USDA have applied during this historic two-agency regulatory process,” said Josh Tetrick, co-founder and CEO of GOOD Meat and Eat Just,” the statement continued.
