*2023 marks the 50th year since Hip-Hop, hopped on the scene and became a force to be reckoned with, and Miss Diddy did something about it.
With countless rappers who have shaped our lives for the last five decades, this year has seen the music industry pay tribute to the genre, with BET being the latest giant to honor its inception and growth throughout time – with the BET Awards airing tomorrow, Los Angeles has been flooded with events surrounding the show.
Last night, Miss Diddy returned with her Toast to Black Hollywood event honoring those making strides and contributions in the industry who may often go overlooked and not get the recognition they deserve.
Some of this year’s nominees included Eva Marcille, Lady London, J. Alphonse Nicholson, Kimberly Paige, and many more; plus a performance from Sevyn Streeter.
EUR spoke with the guests about their love for the genre.
“I posted a really cool Father’s Day message for my dad and it was us dancing to Public Enemy and I’m like, you know, four or five years old,” Streeter said. “Hip-Hop has been in my life for that long. It’s the music that we grew up to in our homes, dancing to with our families, it’s an unspoken language. You can be mad, sad, angry, whatever but you turn on the right song and it just speaks to you.”
One of the honorees showed love to a lot of the emcees who paved the way before her.
“Slick Rick, Run DMC, Roxanne Shantè, MC Lyte, Busta, Swizz, everybody…” Lady London said. “[Hip-Hop] has inspired my artistry till this day. I’m just happy to be mentioned amongst the greats.”
Miss Diddy also shared her favorite artist of all time.
“DMX is my number one artist, period,” Diddy said. “I love Earl Simmons period!”
She also showed love to the female rappers too.
“I’m going to say Kim and Foxy, no order in particular,” Diddy said. “That’s what I grew up on.”
Zerina Akers even pointed out her favorite hip-hop song at this very moment.
“Right now I’m loving Sexyy Red’s “Pound Town.””
