*Former Minneapolis police officer J Alexander Kueng has been sentenced again, this time to three-and-a-half years in state prison for his role in the killing of George Floyd. He is currently serving a federal prison sentence related to the case.

Earlier this year, Kueng along with ex-cops Thomas Lane and Tou Thao were found guilty of federal civil rights offenses. The trio “deprived Floyd of his constitutional right to be free from a police officer’s deliberate indifference to his serious medical needs when they saw him restrained in police custody in clear need of medical care,” the Department of Justice wrote in a statement announcing the convictions, according to CBS News.

The three were charged for failing to intervene as former police officer Derek Chauvin crushed the life out of Floyd when he knelt on his neck for roughly 9 1/2 minutes until Floyd lost consciousness and died.

Chauvin was convicted on state charges of murder and manslaughter as well as federal civil rights offenses for killing Floyd. In April 2021, he was sentenced to 21 years in prison.

In February, Kueng, Lane, and Thao were found guilty of federal civil rights charges. In July, Lane was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison. In October, Kueng pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.

All four former officers have received sentences for the federal charges:

  • Kueng was given a 36-month sentence for failing to intervene
  • Thao was sentenced to 42 months in prison. The state case against him is still pending.
  • Lane is serving a two-and-a-half-year sentence concurrently with a three-year state sentence for second-degree manslaughter

According to CNN, Keung will receive credit for the 84 days he’s already spent imprisoned for the crime. He will serve both his state and federal sentences concurrently.

“The sentencing of Alexander Kueng for his role in the murder of George Floyd delivers yet another piece of justice for the Floyd family,” Floyd family attorneys Ben Crump, Antonio Romanucci, and Jeff Storms said in a statement, Complex reports.

“While the family faces yet another holiday season without George, we hope that moments like these continue to bring them a measure of peace, knowing that George’s death was not in vain,” the statement continued.
