Charlene Mitchell: The FIRST Black Woman to Run for President Has Died at 92 | VIDEO

*If you’re not familiar with Charlene Mitchell or perhaps the mention of her name just now gave you an “oh yeah, now I remember her” sensation, we have unfortunate news about the first Black woman to run for U.S. president as the Communist Party’s nominee in the 1968 election. She has died. The Washington Post reports she passed away on Dec. 14 at a nursing facility in Manhattan, NY. Charlene Mitchell was 92.

Her son Steven confirmed the death. And as of this posting, no cause has been stated.

“In raw numbers, Ms. Mitchell’s impact on the 1968 race was sharply limited by rules in many states that raised obstacles for the Communist Party and other smaller groups to get on the ballot. She and running mate Michael Zagarell received slightly more than 1,000 votes, including write-ins,” the Post wrote. Read more here.
