*CBS brought “Watson” to an early end in March 2026, confirming that the medical mystery series starring Morris Chestnut would not return beyond its second season. The decision arrived shortly before the show’s final episode aired on May 3, concluding its run with unresolved momentum still building in the storyline.
CBS addressed the cancellation during a 2026–27 programming event. “In terms of DMV and Watson, we love both those shows. They were a joy to work on,” said CBS executive Amy Reisenbach, per Deadline.
Reisenbach added further context about the network’s decision-making process: “Morris Chestnut is maybe one of the greatest No. 1’s I’ve ever dealt with,” she said. “But, you know, it’s a high bar on CBS. We aggregate all the numbers, and we have to make those tough decisions in order to make room for new shows.”
The series debuted on January 26, 2025, offering a new take on the Sherlock Holmes universe. The story centers on Dr. John Watson as he balances medicine with ongoing mysteries after Holmes is believed dead. Over time, the narrative shifted significantly, especially in season 2, when revelations suggested Holmes was not actually dead. That storyline intensified further when Sherlock was discovered alive inside a hospital, though he appeared to have lost his memory.
Chestnut reacted to the show’s cancellation in a message on Instagram, writing: “Hey everybody, as the world has heard, unfortunately Watson will not be coming back for season three. Yes, it’s disappointing, but that’s the way the show biz beast is, you know. Yes, the nature of the beast, and you have to take the good with the bad.”
Despite solid viewership early on, including a reported 2.5 million viewers for the season 2 premiere, the show was ultimately not renewed.
Following its end on CBS, “Watson” remains available for streaming on Paramount+ and Pluto TV.
