*Tristan Thompson is weighing in on one of the most divisive topics in American politics, and his perspective carries the weight of personal experience.
The NBA veteran sat down for an upcoming episode of “The Katie Miller Podcast” (watch below) where he voiced his support for President Trump’s immigration crackdown.
Born in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, Thompson spoke as someone who went through the U.S. immigration process himself, giving his endorsement of the administration’s stance a distinctly personal dimension.
“What President [Donald] Trump is doing, first of all, I love what he’s done so far for our country,” Thompson said, Basketball Network reports. “I think he’s helped our country a lot. In terms of where he stands with [immigration].”

“I think… I’m a firm believer because I have family members, and I have people that are immigrants. I believe for those that do the thing the right way and get the papers, I think they should be taken care of first and foremost. I think that’s the right thing. I think that’s the right way of going about it,” he added.
Thompson’s path to American citizenship began when he crossed the border from Canada on a student visa to pursue his basketball ambitions at the high school level. A standout season at the University of Texas led to him being drafted 4th overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2011. Shortly before joining the Boston Celtics in 2020, he completed the naturalization process by taking the Oath of Allegiance before USCIS, officially becoming an American citizen.
Despite his support for stricter enforcement, Thompson acknowledged that not every case is black and white. “I think it should be case by case on the right people. I understand where he’s coming from, but for me, it varies depending on who the person is,” he said.
