*Sandra “Pepa” Denton, one-half of the legendary rap group Salt-N-Pepa, experienced a distressing delay in her travel plans this morning in Las Vegas.
The celebrated hip-hop artist found herself at odds with Southwest Airlines crew members who deemed her a safety risk, leading to her removal from a flight she frequently takes to Nashville.
Pepa’s issues stem from a significant knee injury incurred in a 2018 car accident. To manage her condition, she had purchased two seats and arranged for wheelchair assistance via a paid greeter.
Upon taking her seat, Pepa was approached by a flight attendant who asserted she could not occupy both seats since she was not in a cast. Despite wearing a knee brace due to her injury, it took some discussion before the attendant finally conceded and allowed her to retain the two seats she had bought.

Compounding the stress of her journey, another passenger arrived shortly after and demanded Pepa surrender her extra seat, citing that he was en route to a funeral. The ensuing disagreement involved several passengers debating the legitimacy of her claim compared to his urgent need.
Pepa questioned the passenger further, asking if he would swear to his reason, to which he demurred. Still, he was given the seat, leaving Pepa and her fellow flyers contentious.
To document the situation, Pepa phoned her assistant and discussed the importance of recording the incident. However, mere minutes later, she was mysteriously removed from the plane with no stated reason. Southwest Airlines later justified the action by stating safety concerns over her supposed recording – though Pepa clarified she never actually captured footage.
She rescheduled her meeting and was reimbursed $2500 for her seats but lost $800 for the greeter and car service. Southwest claimed Pepa did not comply with instructions and was removed for the safety of other passengers.
Southwest Airlines conveyed to TMZ Hip Hop that Pepa was non-compliant with crew member instructions, which led to her being deplaned to safeguard the comfort and safety of other passengers.

Pepa has asserted that she will be exploring legal avenues to address potential violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ordeal took another twist when Pepa disclosed that Southwest tried relocating her to the bulkhead emergency row, a position unsuitable given her “disabled” marked boarding pass. She argued that this would have rendered her unable to assist if an emergency arose.
This incident has cast a spotlight on the challenges faced by passengers requiring special accommodations and the necessity for airlines to ensure policies are properly enforced, balancing both the safety and needs of all travelers.
As Pepa considers her next legal steps, her encounter with Southwest Airlines underscores the broader discussions about disability rights and the treatment of passengers requiring assistance.
