*Oprah Winfrey has a perfectly reasonable explanation for that viral Paris Fashion Week moment, and it is a lot funnier than the internet assumed.
The 72-year-old media mogul recently went on record about a clip that drew widespread mockery after she and best friend Gayle King drew attention with an unusually tentative entrance at the Chloé runway show. The footage prompted a wave of jokes across social media, with users piling on over the pair’s slow pace.
Oprah addressed the reaction in a video clip posted to Instagram, making clear she had seen everything people were saying. “On the internet, somebody was, you know how people drag you on the internet. So they were dragging me and Gayle [King] saying, ‘Look at them walking like they’re 90 years old,'” she said.

The culprit, it turned out, was a pair of decorative sunglasses with no vision correction. Just before stepping out of the vehicle, her assistant passed her the Chloé frames, which did nothing to help her actually see. “And so there was a moment where we’re walking into the Chloe fashion show and my [assistant] had just handed me the Chloe sunglasses before I got out of the car,” she said. “I didn’t know where I was walking, I could not see.”
Completely disoriented, Oprah leaned on her security detail to guide each step. “So everybody who’s saying ‘you’re walking like you’re 90,’ I could not see! I told security, ‘I can’t see. I can’t see. Tell me, tell me where I’m walking. I can’t see.'”
Gayle, meanwhile, was dealing with a separate physical setback. “And Gayle’s like, ‘I got two broken toes. I can’t walk,'” Oprah revealed. “And that’s the reason we looked like we were 90 years old is because I couldn’t see and Gayle’s got two broken toes!”
