*Nicki Minaj’s vocal support for former President Donald Trump has sparked a heated conversation online, but some critics question whether the rapper is actually converting her fans into Republican voters.
The controversy began after Minaj appeared at a Trump Accounts summit on January 28, where she called herself Trump’s “No. 1 fan,” prompting reactions from her devoted followers. Following her public endorsement, numerous fans on X (formerly Twitter) announced that they were leaving the Democratic Party and aligning with the Republican Party. Many framed their political switch as a response to what they saw as unfair treatment of Minaj, including social media criticism, press coverage, and public mockery.
One fan declared, “Officially a Republican!!!!!!! I’ll never vote for a democrat ever again,” while another wrote, “Just OFFICIALLY left the Democratic party… Nicki Minaj x MAGA for the win.”

By February 7 and 8, posts from the rapper’s fanbase, known as “Barbz,” dominated X with declarations of allegiance to the Republican Party and criticism of Democrats. The viral posts attracted mainstream attention, with outlets like Newsweek and Fox News highlighting the so-called “Nicki Minaj Republicans” phenomenon.
Despite the surge of posts, skeptics argue that fans are not genuinely changing their political beliefs, The Mirror reports. “Fans don’t actually switch parties because of a celebrity. They just post louder,” one social media user wrote. Another cautioned, “Right, love, if your loyalty to a rapper leads you to pick a political party, you might want to check your priorities. Music’s for enjoying, not for swapping your common sense.”
While Minaj’s influence over her fanbase is undeniable, critics suggest that much of the online activity may be performative rather than a true shift in ideology.
