Black Navy SEAL Targeted With Racist Memes Gets Justice—Sort Of
In a disturbing case that highlights the persistent issues of racism within the U.S. military, a Black sailor who was subjected to racist memes by fellow Navy SEALs has had his SEAL trident reinstated after a months-long investigation. The memes depicted him as an enslaved person, including modified images of him on a slave ship and with his face altered to look like a monkey. The sailor, previously a member of SEAL Team 4 in Virginia, had his SEAL qualifications revoked last year—a move that is now being reversed as a result of the probe, NewsOne is reporting.
The Associated Press reported that the offensive memes were circulated as far back as 2022 in a platoon-wide Signal chat. While the sailor reported them earlier this year, disciplinary actions have only recently come to light. Two Navy SEALs are facing non-judicial punishment and punitive letters, which could lead to demotion, loss of pay, or even the end of their careers. Several platoon and team leaders are also being disciplined for what the Navy calls “leadership failures.”
Was Retaliation Behind SEAL Status Revocation?
While the official investigation doesn’t conclusively say that the sailor lost his SEAL status as retaliation for reporting racism, many are drawing their own conclusions. According to Navy officials, the decision to revoke his SEAL qualifications was flawed, and many of the sailor’s complaints were found to be legitimate. Out of more than a dozen complaints filed, about half were substantiated.
“This was a very shocking case of explicit and repeated racist memes directed at our client in a platoon-wide text thread,” said Timothy Parlatore, the sailor’s attorney. “They modified his face in photos to look like a monkey and portrayed him as a chained slave on a slave ship, among others.”
As a result of the investigation by Naval Special Warfare Group 2, which oversees SEAL Team 4, the sailor will not only be reinstated but will also receive back pay. The Navy confirmed that accountability actions are ongoing and that the broader investigation remains open.
Navy’s Diversity Problem Goes Beyond This Case
This high-profile incident is drawing attention to a larger problem within the Navy SEAL ranks—lack of diversity. As of March 2021, 95% of all SEAL and combatant-craft crew officers were white, while only 2% were Black, according to Navy data. Among enlisted SEALs, diversity was only marginally better. By contrast, the overall Navy is 40% people of color among enlisted ranks and 24% among officers.
These numbers show that elite military units like the SEALs are significantly less diverse than the rest of the Navy, which raises questions about institutional bias, exclusionary practices, and barriers to advancement for people of color.
Leadership’s Mixed Signals on Inclusion
This scandal also shines a light on the Trump administration’s current approach to diversity in the military. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, a former Fox News host, has been vocal in his opposition to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. His ongoing efforts to eliminate DEI training and programs from the military are in sharp contrast to the needs highlighted by this case.
While the administration continues its push to ban transgender Americans from military service, it’s unclear whether the same urgency exists for rooting out racism and bigotry. Many critics argue that the lack of enthusiasm for dealing with racism is telling—and that protecting marginalized service members seems to be a low priority for current military leadership.

What Happens Next?
Naval Special Warfare Command has promised further accountability, but the outcome remains to be seen. Letters of reprimand, while potentially career-ending, fall far short of the systemic changes many advocates are calling for. Without broader reforms, these incidents may continue to fester in the shadows of elite military units.
In the meantime, the reinstated sailor’s case serves as both a small step toward justice and a glaring reminder of how far the military still has to go in fostering a climate of respect, fairness, and true equality. For those who believe the armed forces should reflect the values they claim to defend, this story is a sobering wake-up call.
