*A shocking discovery at a Missouri discount store has put families on alert after fentanyl was found taped inside the packaging of five Barbie dolls. According to PEOPLE, the dolls were sold at Cargo Largo between March 19 and 20, prompting a swift police response.
The incident came to light when mother Jade Adams purchased a Barbie for her children and noticed a suspicious substance inside. “When [my husband] opened it with a knife, it was like, poof, in the car. We were like, ‘What is that?’” she told WDAF. Adams’ mother returned the doll to the store and urged employees to check all Barbies, leading staff to gather multiple dolls for security inspection.
The Independence Police Department (IPD) confirmed the substance was fentanyl. “IPD determined the substance was fentanyl and immediately began an investigation with Cargo Largo to determine how many compromised units were sold,” the department said in a Facebook news release. Investigators found a total of five affected dolls.
All compromised units have now been recovered, and a suspect is in custody, though authorities have not released their identity. The IPD confirmed the dolls themselves were not contaminated and said they do not believe any other stores received compromised units. No injuries have been reported.
Adams expressed relief that her children were not exposed. “They could have dusted that all over themselves, their house, wherever they opened it. Like, it’s not just me, it’s really just the kids for me. That’s my baby, that’s my last baby, that’s terrifying,” she said.
The IPD said the investigation is ongoing as authorities work to determine how the dangerous substance ended up in the toys.
