*”The conversation surrounding LeBron James’ future intensified despite his decision to opt into his player option for the 2025–26 season. With the Los Angeles Lakers increasingly prioritizing Luka Doncic, questions have surfaced about how James fits into the team’s evolving direction.
According to Newsweek, Los Angeles has remained competitive in the Western Conference, holding a 20–10 record while leaning heavily on its new star. Since arriving from Dallas in February, Doncic has become the focal point of the offense and has produced historic numbers through 23 games. Meanwhile, James, 40, has dipped to 20.5 points per game through 14 appearances, marking the lowest scoring average of his career. As a result, the Lakers have increasingly relied on Doncic and Austin Reaves to carry the scoring load.
Bill Simmons of The Ringer proposed a dramatic solution, suggesting Los Angeles consider sending James to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for Jimmy Butler.

“How do you make the league more fun? You have a team that nobody’s excited about with the Lakers and a team that feels dead with the Warriors. LeBron for Jimmy Butler. That’s it,” Simmons said. “It feels like a ‘for the good of the sport trade,’ just more fun.”
Simmons expanded on the idea by highlighting the entertainment value of pairing James with Stephen Curry, while also questioning James’ commitment to his current team. “The Warriors are not fun. I don’t see a scenario where they become fun, but now you put LeBron on the team with (Steph) Curry, LeBron reinvigorated, and who knows? And then Butler is probably a better fit with Luka and Reeves anyway.” He added, “LeBron doesn’t really seem like he wants to be on the Lakers, is my take.”
While the proposal remains hypothetical, it highlights how dramatically the priorities of both organizations may be shifting as they seek relevance and momentum.
