*Walmart Inc. has unveiled a comprehensive executive reorganization that positions Latriece Watkins as the new president and CEO of Sam’s Club U.S., marking one of several strategic appointments announced by incoming global CEO John Furner. The changes take effect February 1 as the Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer prepares for what Furner describes as a transformative period shaped by artificial intelligence, The Business Journals reports.
Watkins currently serves as executive vice president and chief merchandising officer for Walmart U.S. Her journey with the company began in 1997 as an intern, and she has since accumulated extensive experience across multiple divisions, including Sam’s Club operations, merchandising, human resources, and store management throughout her nearly three-decade tenure.
“What I love about Walmart is simple—it’s a place where people matter and opportunity lives. It’s a company built on serving others and creating impact in communities every single day,” Watkins said in a statement shared on LinkedIn.
“What’s special about Sam’s Club is the pride the associates take in serving members, the focus on value and quality, and the way teams show up for each other. There’s undeniable momentum here, and I’m honored to lead the next chapter by protecting and amplifying our culture, fully leveraging the power of our company, and winning omnichannel retail together and with intention. I look forward to what we’ll accomplish together,” she added.
Chris Nicholas, who presently leads Sam’s Club U.S. as president and CEO, will transition to president and CEO of Walmart International. The position becomes available following Kath McLay’s departure from the company at January’s end. Additional executive movements include David Guggina ascending from executive vice president and chief e-commerce officer for Walmart U.S. to president and CEO of the domestic division. Seth Dallaire will expand his current role as executive vice president and chief growth officer for Walmart U.S. to serve in the same capacity for the entire corporation.
Furner characterized the leadership restructuring as essential preparation for retail’s evolving landscape.
“Over my 32 years with Walmart, I’ve seen that our people are our greatest competitive advantage. These internal promotions reflect our culture of opportunity and the depth of our leadership bench,” Furner said in the news release.
“These leadership changes also mark a key step in how we organize for the future. Even the best teams need the right structure to win. As AI rapidly reshapes retail, we are centralizing our platforms to accelerate shared capabilities, freeing up our operating segments to be more focused on and closer to our customers and members,” he continued.
