*Walmart is transforming the retail landscape by embracing artificial intelligence through a partnership with OpenAI.
CBS News reports that the collaboration integrates ChatGPT’s “Instant Checkout” feature, enabling customers to browse and purchase products directly within the chat interface. The retailer announced, “Walmart is ushering in the next generation of retail by combining its huge assortment, everyday low prices and delivery speed with the power of AI. Today, the company announced a new partnership with OpenAI that will start with allowing customers and members to soon shop Walmart through ChatGPT using Instant Checkout. Whether planning meals, restocking household essentials, or finding something new, customers can simply chat and buy, and Walmart will handle the rest.”
This initiative, described as “agentic commerce,” leverages AI to anticipate customer needs proactively. “AI will learn and predict customers’ needs, turning shopping from a reactive experience into a proactive one,” the company stated. This approach aims to make shopping more intuitive and tailored to individual preferences.
The retailer’s generative AI assistant, Sparky, plays a pivotal role in delivering personalized shopping experiences. Walmart CEO Doug McMillon emphasized the need for innovation, stating, “For many years now, eCommerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses. That is about to change … We are running toward that more enjoyable and convenient future with Sparky and through partnerships including this important step with OpenAI.”

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, highlighted the collaboration’s impact, noting it “makes everyday purchases a little simpler.”
Meanwhile, competitors like Amazon are also exploring agentic AI with features like “Buy for Me,” where “customers are taken to an Amazon checkout page where they confirm order details, including preferred delivery address, applicable taxes and shipping fees, and payment method,” the company explained on its corporate website.
