*Atlanta-based food lovers will have to find a new place to get their seafood fix, with the temporary closure of the city’s beloved eatery Bankhead Seafood.
News of the closing was announced by rapper Michael “Killer Mike” Render, one of the Westside restaurant’s partners, Rolling Out reports. According to the Run the Jewels member, much-needed upgrades are the reason for the Bankhead Seafood’s hiatus. Expectations from the restaurant call for it to reopen on July 14, but the date remains tentative pending completion of the improvements.
Bankhead Seafood’s manager, Waleed Shamsid-Deen, confirmed the upgrades are the reason for the reset, stating the establishment is temporarily closing to reset operations.
Although current employees were notified of their suspended employment, they were not provided a specific reopening timeline.
Despite this, Shamsid-Deen and the restaurant partners are optimistic on a swift return to business. Staff positions for employees will remain secure throughout the renovation period, the management emphasized.

Upgrade Specifics
As customers deal with the temporary absence, the upgrade for Bankhead Seafood will be an active one. Plans from management include updates to the eatery’s menu and operational improvements, in addition to comprehensive staff training programs.
Multiple aspects of restaurant operations will be focused on as part of what Rolling Out described as “a strategic investment in long-term sustainability rather than a response to operational challenges.”
Historical Impact
A local staple in the community originally founded by the late Helen Harden, Bankhead Seafood is known for its fried fish platters and signature hushpuppies. Over the years the years, a slew of Atlanta residents has dined there as well as various celebrities the city’s mayor Andre Dickens and civil rights leader Bernice King.

The temporary closure is not the first time Bankhead Seafood has shut its doors. In 2017, the establishment closed but was brought back in November 2024 via Killer Mike’s partnership with fellow ATL rhymeslinger Clifford Harris (aka T.I.). The pair focused on Harden’s original recipes for the revival as well as her culinary vision by working closely with Harden’s family to preserve the authentic flavors that captured its essence as the go-to spot for good eats.\
