*Leave it to a scheduling conflict to put Keke Palmer in the crosshairs of Ryan Murphy. The ‘Nope’ entertainer shed light on the conflict during a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times.
According to Palmer, being “ripped” by Murphy for missing a day of filming her show “Scream Queens” was not a pleasant experience.
“It was kind of like I was in the dean’s office,” she said about the alleged exchange, adding that was like, ‘I’ve never seen you behave like this. I can’t believe that you, out of all people, would do something like this.’ ”
Detailing what happened, Palmer said she was originally off on the day she missed, but production later changed the schedule. As a result, Palmer opted toward honoring a prior commitment instead of moving things around for the new shoot date. Although she thought things were good with her and Murphy, the “True Jackson, VP” alum discovered days later from an unnamed cast member that their issue was still a hot-button one.
“I said, ‘Ryan talked to me and I guess he’s cool, it’s fine,’ and she was like, ‘It’s bad,’ ” Palmer continued, feeling as though her costar may have been “trying to make” her “scared, which was a little irritating.”
Reminiscing in her upcoming memoir “Master of Me: The Secret to Controlling Your Narrative,” Palmer wrote that she hoped speaking up for herself and honoring her prior commitment made Murphy see her “as a business,” knowing that the “American Horror Story” co-creator was a busy man and likely just concerned with his business dealings running smoothly.
Premiering in 2015, “Scream Queens” was a horror comedy series that centered on the sorority Kappa Kappa Tau (KKT), which became the target of a serial killer who used the Red Devil mascot of the fictional Wallace University as a disguise.
In addition to Palmer, the show, which ran for two seasons, starred Jamie Lee Curtis, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Lea Michele, Abigail Breslin and Niecy Nash. Pop stars Nick Jonas and Ariana Grande were also featured on “Scream Queens” in guest roles.
Writing about her experience on the series, Palmer described a set where things were far from stellar. One situation in particular stood out as a white costar known as “Brenda” allegedly made a racist remark to her while “Scream Queens” was filming.
At the time, Palmer tried to play peacemaker when she saw Brenda and another unnamed cast member disagreeing. Stepping in, Palmer claimed she suggested that the ladies “have fun and respect each other.” ”
“‘Keke, literally, just don’t. Who do you think you are? Martin f—— Luther King?’ ” Brenda allegedly replied.
“It was such a weighted thing that she said, but I didn’t allow that weight to be projected on me, because I know who I am. I’m not no victim, Palmer further wrote, per the Times via People. “That’s not my storyline, sweetie. I don’t care what her ass said. If I allow what she said to cripple me, then she would.”
News of Palmer’s “Scream Queens” drama comes as she promotes her “Master of Me,” which is set to be released on Nov. 19.
