Fiery I-10 freeway crash leaves 3 dead and traffic halted
*A deadly crash on the westbound San Bernardino Freeway/I-10 freeway in Ontario, California, killed three people on Tuesday afternoon. The violent pileup happened near the I-15 interchange around 1:10 p.m. and involved up to eight vehicles. A red semi-truck, traveling at full speed, plowed into stopped traffic without braking.
The crash caused a massive fireball, fueled by leaking materials from the semi-truck. Flames engulfed several cars, leaving one vehicle so damaged that its make and model were unrecognizable. Witnesses described the crash scene as “like a tornado tearing through cars and trucks.”

Dashcam shows semi-truck barreling into traffic on I-10
Dashcam footage captured the semi-truck as it smashed into the rear of an SUV. It continued forward, crushing cars and striking four other semi-trucks in the process. The I-10 freeway crash immediately shut down all westbound lanes except FasTrak.
Cleanup crews worked overnight to reopen the road and clear hazardous materials. Traffic backups stretched for miles across the Inland Empire due to the fiery accident. Authorities said full reopening happened later that night after safety checks.
Crash victims identified as CHP investigation continues
Three people died at the scene of the I-10 freeway crash, authorities confirmed. Their identities are being withheld until family members are notified.
The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office is handling the investigation.
Four other people were rushed to nearby hospitals with serious injuries. Two of them were reported in critical condition as of Wednesday morning.
Updates on their recovery have not yet been released.

21-year-old driver arrested for suspected drug DUI
The driver of the red Freightliner truck was a 21-year-old man from Yuba City, California. He survived the crash and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers reported signs of impairment at the scene.
Toxicology tests are underway, and the driver’s name has not been released. Authorities are also examining how he received his commercial driver’s license at such a young age. The federal minimum age for interstate truck drivers is 21, raising safety questions.
I-10 crash triggers concerns about trucking safety rules
The I-10 freeway crash has renewed public debate over commercial trucking standards. Social media users questioned the age and training of the 21-year-old driver. Critics are calling for stricter enforcement of drug testing and driver experience levels.
CHP officials say they are focusing on whether the truck had mechanical issues. They confirmed no other drivers appeared to be at fault in the fiery crash.
Cleanup crews reported no major environmental damage despite the fuel spill.
Trucking incidents rising on California freeways in 2025
This crash adds to a growing list of serious semi-truck collisions in California this year. High-traffic corridors like I-10 and I-5 have seen several deadly wrecks. Transportation safety experts are urging faster policy updates for truck driver regulations.
Officials encourage drivers to stay alert in slow traffic zones and report reckless driving. CHP continues to investigate the Ontario crash and urges witnesses to come forward. Updates will be shared as new information becomes available.
