*The iconic musical Dreamgirls is set to return to Broadway in fall 2026, producers Sonia Friedman Productions, Sue Wagner, John Johnson, and LaChanze Productions announced, ABC News reports.
Directed and choreographed by Camille A. Brown, known for her stage work on Alicia Keys’ Hell’s Kitchen, the revival will follow the rise of a Black female singing trio chasing fame, aiming to capture the magic of the 1981 original.
Producers are launching a global casting search for the trio, seeking talented women of all shapes and sizes. Auditions will be held in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, Miami, London, Toronto, Mexico City, Amsterdam, Rome, and Paris, emphasizing the show’s commitment to diverse talent. The original production starred Sheryl Lee Ralph, Jennifer Holliday, and Loretta Devine.
Dreamgirls first dazzled audiences in 1981, earning 13 Tony nominations and six wins, including Best Lead Actor (Ben Harney), Best Lead Actress (Holliday), and Best Choreography (Michael Bennett and Michael Peters). The story also found international acclaim with a 2016 West End run and a 2006 film adaptation starring Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé, Jamie Foxx, and Eddie Murphy, which earned Hudson an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
Meanwhile, Alicia Keys’ Hell’s Kitchen Broadway musical, which is inspired by the singer’s early life in New York City, is preparing for a North American tour next month, MadameNoire reports.
Keys, who wrote the music and lyrics for “Hell’s Kitchen,” began developing the show in 2011, with its Broadway debut in 2024. The musical has garnered significant acclaim, earning 13 Tony nominations in 2024 and winning two. It also received a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album earlier this year.
The “Hell’s Kitchen” tour will visit over 30 cities.
