*Even at the height of success, Grammy-winning artists like Doechii are not immune to mental health struggles. In a recent cover story with The Cut, the “Denial Is a River” rapper opened up about her battle with suicidal thoughts during a difficult period in sixth grade.
“I was getting bullied so bad that I was thinking about killing myself,” she shared. However, a moment of clarity changed her life: “I realized, ‘Oh, f—, I’m gonna kill myself and then I’m gonna be the only one dead.’ The bullies aren’t gonna be with me, and everything they said is not coming with me either.”
This powerful realization marked a turning point for Doechii. She described how a wave of peace washed over her, and she embraced the affirmation, “I am Doechii.”
“It was more like this feeling of — ‘I made a choice, a decision. I am the most important character in this movie. This is my motherf—ing movie,'” she explained.
Her story highlights the importance of mental health awareness, especially in high-pressure industries like music. According to a 2022 study by the University of Westminster, 73% of musicians experience mental health issues, often exacerbated by public scrutiny and industry demands. Doechii’s ability to reframe her perspective and find strength in her identity is a testament to the power of resilience and self-empowerment.

From Bullying to Grammy Glory: Doechii’s Rise to Stardom
Earlier this month, Doechii made history by winning her first Grammy for Best Rap Album with her mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal. In her acceptance speech, she paid tribute to the two women who preceded her—Lauryn Hill and Cardi B—acknowledging their groundbreaking contributions to the genre.
Born Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon in Tampa, Florida, Doechii grew up in a musically inclined family. Her father and uncle were rappers, and she was immersed in the arts from a young age, participating in ballet, tap dancing, acting, cheerleading, gymnastics, and soccer. She attended Howard W. Blake High School, a performing arts school, where she initially aspired to become a professional choral singer. However, her path shifted when a friend encouraged her to produce and share music online.
Lauryn Hill’s Influence: Doechii’s Commitment to Authenticity
In her Cut interview, Doechii spoke about the importance of transparency in her lyrics, citing Lauryn Hill as a major inspiration. “The feeling that I have when I listen to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is the same feeling I want some other Black little girl to have when she listens to me,” she said. “And for her to have that feeling, I have to talk about my feelings.”
This commitment to authenticity has resonated deeply with fans and critics alike, earning her a reputation as one of the most genuine voices in modern rap. By sharing her struggles and triumphs, Doechii is not only creating impactful music but also fostering a sense of connection and empowerment among her listeners.
