*A high-profile lawsuit accusing Sean “Diddy” Combs and Jay-Z of raping a 13-year-old girl in 2000 has been voluntarily dismissed by the plaintiff’s attorneys, according to a court filing made on Friday in New York.
The dismissal marks the end of a contentious legal battle that has drawn significant media attention and sparked heated public statements from both sides, Variety is reporting.
The lawsuit, filed by a woman identified as Jane Doe, was dismissed “with prejudice,” meaning it cannot be refiled in its current form. Attorneys Tony Buzbee and Antigone Curis, who represented Jane Doe, submitted the dismissal notice, effectively ending the case. The decision comes after months of legal wrangling, public accusations, and a series of court filings that revealed inconsistencies in the plaintiff’s account.
Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, celebrated the dismissal as a “victory” in a statement issued through his entertainment company, Roc Nation. He expressed relief that the “frivolous, fictitious, and appalling allegations” had been dismissed, but also highlighted the emotional toll the case had taken on his family.
“This civil suit was without merit and never going anywhere,” Jay-Z wrote. “The fictional tale they created was laughable, if not for the seriousness of the claims. I would not wish this experience on anyone. The trauma that my wife, my children, loved ones, and I have endured can never be dismissed.”
Jay-Z’s attorney, Alex Spiro, also released a statement, emphasizing that the case “never should have been brought” and praising Jay-Z for standing firm against the allegations. “By standing up in the face of heinous and false allegations, Jay has done what few can—he pushed back, he never settled, he never paid one red penny, he triumphed and cleared his name,” Spiro said.
The lawsuit was initially filed against Sean “Diddy” Combs in October 2023, with Jay-Z added as a defendant two months later. Jane Doe alleged that the two music moguls had raped her in 2000 after an MTV Music Video Awards afterparty. However, her credibility came under scrutiny during the legal proceedings. In a December interview, Jane Doe admitted that “not all the facts are clear” in her recollection of the events and acknowledged that she “may have made a mistake in identifying” her alleged assailants.
Despite these admissions, a judge allowed her to proceed anonymously in the lawsuit, a decision that Jay-Z’s legal team challenged. Last month, Jay-Z filed a motion to dismiss the case, citing inconsistencies in Jane Doe’s account. The motion was granted by United States District Judge Analisa Torres, paving the way for Friday’s dismissal.
While Jay-Z has been cleared of the allegations, Sean “Diddy” Combs continues to face significant legal challenges. Combs, who has been incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since September 2024 on charges of racketeering and sex trafficking, has been denied bail three times. His trial is scheduled to begin on May 5, 2025, and he could face life in prison if convicted.

Combs’ legal team responded to the dismissal of the Jane Doe lawsuit, calling it “another confirmation that these lawsuits are built on falsehoods, not facts.” In a statement, they accused plaintiffs of hiding behind anonymity and criticized their attorneys for prioritizing “media headlines over legal merit.”
“For months, we have seen case after case filed by individuals hiding behind anonymity, pushed forward by an attorney more focused on media headlines than legal merit,” the statement read. “Just like this claim, the others will fall apart because there is no truth to them. Sean Combs has never sexually assaulted or trafficked anyone—man or woman, adult or minor. No number of lawsuits, sensationalized allegations, or media theatrics will change that reality.”
The dismissal of the Jane Doe lawsuit is a significant development in the ongoing legal saga surrounding Sean “Diddy” Combs and Jay-Z. For Jay-Z, the case’s conclusion represents a vindication of his reputation and a chance to move forward after months of public scrutiny. For Combs, however, the legal battles are far from over, as he faces multiple lawsuits and the prospect of a lengthy prison sentence.
As the dust settles on this case, the broader implications for the entertainment industry and the legal system remain unclear. The dismissal underscores the challenges of pursuing high-profile sexual assault cases, particularly when plaintiffs seek anonymity and face intense public scrutiny. It also raises questions about the balance between protecting victims and ensuring due process for the accused.
For now, Jay-Z and his family can breathe a sigh of relief, while Sean “Diddy” Combs prepares for the next chapter in his legal fight. As the saying goes, “the truth will prevail,” but in this case, it seems to have done so in very different ways for the two defendants.
