Physical editions come with a 12-page booklet containing never-before-seen photos and liner notes by Atron Gregory of TNT Records, who helped propel the group to fame. Gatefold packaging, designed by Lovepop, features a three-dimensional pop-up recording studio inspired by original artwork from Gregory “Shock G” Jacobs, created under the pseudonym “Rackadelic.” A new lyric video for album track “Freaks of the Industry” showcases Jacobs’ artwork and is streaming now. Forged by the Bay Area’s laid-back vibe and Miami bass energy, Digital Underground blended P-Funk samples, live drums, and jazzy keyboards while introducing comical alter egos like MC Blowfish and Humpty Hump. “Sex Packets,” a concept album about “Genetic Suppression Relief Antidotes,” became a critical and commercial success upon its spring 1990 release. “Doowutchyalike” charted on Billboard’s Hot Rap Singles and Hot Dance Music charts, while “The Humpty Dance” reached No. 1 on Hot Rap Singles and No. 11 on the Hot 100. The album peaked at No. 24 on the Billboard 200 and No. 8 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, earning platinum certification.
Digital Underground’s influence continues, spotlighting artists like Saafir and Tupac Shakur while Shock G’s production work with 2Pac, Prince, and Luniz endures as a testament to the group’s lasting impact on hip-hop.
