*At 80, Melba Moore is celebrating a lifetime in entertainment while preparing to step back onto the stage with renewed energy. The Tony Award-winning performer is set to headline “Melba Moore: From Broadway, With Love” at 54 Below on June 24 and 25, marking another chapter in her enduring career.
Moore first gained recognition on Broadway as part of the original cast of “Hair” and later earned a Tony Award for her role in “Purlie.” Now, she is reflecting on those milestones and more in her newly released memoir “This Is It — Marvelous… & Getting Better,” which explores her journey through music, theater, and personal growth.
Alongside her return to live performance, Moore is also sharing insight into how she has maintained her vocal strength over the decades. In an excerpt from her memoir, via PEOPLE, she emphasizes that singing requires far more than just vocal ability. “So many people think that singers need their throat, our vocal chords alone, to be great singers. That’s not true.”

She explains that physical conditioning plays a critical role in her endurance on stage. “There’s so much strength, endurance and core work that it takes to hold those notes and work that stage for the 60 to 90 minutes many of us do it for,” she writes, noting that modern performers often go even longer in high-energy productions.
Moore credits her “PUSH BACK” fitness routine as a key part of her longevity. “I say that life and age can push you and I PUSH BACK!” she shares, describing exercises focused on legs, core, and overall strength to support her performances.
Beyond the gym, Moore highlights the importance of staying active in everyday life. “MOVE! That’s the trick, and not doing it is the trap!” she writes, encouraging consistent movement as a foundation for physical health and stamina.
She also underscores the connection between posture, breathing, and vocal performance. “People do not realize how much core work it takes to stand flat-footed and sing into a mic for an hour,” Moore explains, adding that controlled breathing techniques are essential for sustaining vocal power.
As she prepares for her upcoming shows, Moore’s message is clear: discipline, awareness, and movement remain at the heart of her lasting success.
