*Peacock’s “Crystal Lake,” a prequel to the “Friday the 13th” franchise, has taken a major step forward as production gears up and details begin to emerge.
Helmed by Brad Caleb Kane, best known for his work on “Welcome to Derry,” the series promises to revisit the eerie origins of Camp Crystal Lake, exploring the life and descent of Pamela Voorhees long before her son Jason donned the hockey mask. Linda Cardellini has been confirmed as the lead, portraying Pamela Voorhees, Variety reports. The character, originally brought to life by Betsy Palmer in the 1980 film, is infamous for unleashing a trail of terror after the death of her son. This prequel aims to dig deeper, placing Pamela back in her counselor days and unraveling the sinister secrets of the camp that spawned a horror icon.
Despite initial turbulence, including the departure of original showrunner Bryan Fuller in early 2024, momentum behind the series is building. Kane, who stepped in following Fuller’s exit, has reassured fans of progress. In a recent Instagram post, he shared an image featuring a draft script dated March 26, 2025, captioned with excitement: “Crystal Lake Production offices are live. It’s all happening. MACHETES FOR EVERYONE!”
Kane has expressed a personal connection to the franchise. “From the moment I watched Jason Voorhees squeeze a guy’s eyeball out of its socket (in glorious 3D!) at the tender age of 8 years old, I knew my creative path was someday destined to converge with The Man Behind The Mask,” he shared. “Nothing defined my childhood more than growing up in the golden age of the slasher flick, and nothing’s defined the genre more than Friday The 13th.”
The “Friday the 13th” franchise began with its first film in 1980, which became a major box office success, earning nearly $60 million on a modest $550,000 budget. The series expanded with eleven more movies and a 2009 reboot. While Pamela Voorhees was the original killer, her son Jason became the central villain with the second installment.
Cardellini remains the only confirmed cast member for the prequel series, with the casting for young Jason expected soon. “Crystal Lake” has no official release date.
