*Chris Paul’s return to the Los Angeles Clippers came to an unexpected end on Wednesday when the team announced it was parting ways with the NBA veteran.
As SandraRose.com reports, the point guard broke the news himself in an Instagram story, writing, “Just found out I’m being sent home,” along with a peace sign emoji. Paul, 40, re-signed with the franchise this summer on a one-year deal but averaged just 2.9 points in 16 games.
The announcement came as the Clippers were in Atlanta to face the Hawks on Wednesday. Clippers coach Ty Lue addressed the situation, stating, “I just think it wasn’t a good fit for what he was looking for. It is what it is. Do I want to see CP go out like this? No. I have a lot of respect for him. He’s been a friend of mine over the years. You never wanna see a great go out like this. But I’m pretty sure he will find something because he’s a great player. … I didn’t wanna see it end like this.”

Paul initially joined the Clippers in 2011 and played six seasons before leaving in 2017. After stints with the Houston Rockets, Oklahoma City Thunder, Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors, and San Antonio Spurs, he returned to Los Angeles hoping to close out his career where his “Lob City” legacy began. Paul signed a one-year contract for $3,634,153 in July and announced his plans to retire at the conclusion of the 2025-26 season.
Despite his legacy as a 12-time All-Star, 2-time Olympic gold medalist, and having led the NBA in assists five times and steals a record six times, Paul struggled in his second stint with the Clippers. The team went 2–14 in their last 16 games with Paul as the primary playmaker.
Lue added, “I don’t like it. It just didn’t work out like we thought it would. I don’t like it for CP, but it wasn’t a good fit. We understood that. So, like (I) said, it was an organization (decision). They made the choice. We move forward. We got to see what we do. We will see.”
