NYC woman sues Chipotle after biting into “mystery meat”
*A New York woman has filed a lawsuit against Chipotle, DoorDash, and a delivery driver after allegedly biting into a rodent hidden in her chicken burrito bowl. The civil suit, filed December 9, 2025, claims the incident caused “shock, vomiting, and trauma”—and the internet is thoroughly horrified.
Gia Bernhardt, 24, placed her order from the Chipotle on Manhattan’s Upper East Side back in January. But according to her lawyer, what arrived was far from extra protein—it was a mouthful of mouse. No photos have been released yet, but the story is already triggering gag reflexes across social media.
The alleged burrito betrayal: what the lawsuit says
According to court documents, Bernhardt ordered a burrito bowl, chips, and guac via DoorDash on January 11. After taking a bite, she felt something off—and realized too late that she had bitten into what she believed was chicken, but was actually part of a rodent.
Her lawyer, Steven Vaccaro, told PIX11 News that Bernhardt immediately vomited, went into “shock,” and later sought medical treatment. She even returned to the Chipotle location to confront staff, but got no immediate answers. Now, she’s seeking damages for emotional trauma, medical bills, and lost wages.

Chipotle denies the claims—hard
In a statement, Chipotle spokesperson Laurie Schalow said, “We strongly deny the allegations in this complaint, and we will vigorously defend ourselves.” The company also cited its “industry-leading food safety practices” and said the location in question has no health violations on record.
DoorDash, also named in the suit, has yet to comment. The unnamed delivery driver is being sued under the placeholder name “John Doe.”
This isn’t Chipotle’s first rodent rodeo
While this case is especially graphic, it’s not the first time rodents have been linked to the burrito chain. In 2024, a Chipotle in New Haven, Connecticut, was temporarily closed for rodent control. And Chipotle’s long-running battles with food safety—from E. coli scares to norovirus outbreaks—remain part of its PR baggage.
For DoorDash, the timing is equally unfortunate. The company has faced backlash for delivery mishaps, with critics now questioning how much quality control actually happens between the restaurant and the doorstep.

Social media says: nope, nope, and extra nope
The story exploded on X, with #ChipotleRodent trending in NYC and beyond. The Daily Beast’s report hit over 3,600 views in hours, with foodies, meme lords, and germaphobes chiming in.
- Outraged: “This is why I inspect EVERY delivery. Poor girl—hope she gets millions.” — @NYCFoodieQueen
- Disgusted but laughing: “Chipotle: Where the chicken is free-range… and so are the mice.” — @MemeLordManhattan
- Skeptical: “Sounds fake, but if true… yikes.” — @SkepticalBiter
One post joked, “Me after this news: sticking to salads forever. #BurritoBowlGoneWrong”. Others called for boycotts or demanded health inspections. Over 50,000 impressions and counting suggest the internet’s appetite for food-horror stories is alive and gagging.
What’s next? Lawsuit looms as public recoils
Legal experts predict a likely settlement, especially if evidence surfaces. Similar cases in fast food—like a 2019 “rat in fries” lawsuit—have ended with quiet six-figure payouts. But if Bernhardt’s case goes to trial, expect Chipotle’s food safety protocols to face intense scrutiny.
As of now, no public response from DoorDash or the delivery driver. But one thing is clear: next time you order a burrito bowl, maybe take a peek before you dig in.
