*In honor of Mother’s Day this Sunday, we’d like to share a newly released NowThis Her video featuring Patrisse Cullors, co-founder of Black Lives Matter and senior fellow for-maternal justice at MomsRising, and Anayah Sangodele-Ayoka, a midwife based in North Carolina and consultant at MomsRising. The video raises awareness about the importance of midwifery in reducing racial disparities in maternal death rates.
Black women are three to four times more likely than white women to die from pregnancy-related complications. This disparity is caused by many factors, including implicit bias and racism in the healthcare system.
There is evidence that greater use of midwives could help reduce racial disparities in maternal health. Additionally, a recent study shows that states that have done the most to integrate midwives into their health care systems, including Washington, New Mexico and Oregon, have some of the best outcomes for mothers, particularly black mothers.
If you’re interested, I’m also happy to connect you with Patrisse and Anayah, who can discuss the historic importance of midwifery in black and underserved communities, and what needs to be done to make the practice viable again and improve the maternal health for black women across the country.
