*We caught up with Onya Nurve, Kori King, and Joella from “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 17 to unpack their journey on the show and what fans can expect from this exciting new season.
Season 17 kicked off earlier this month with two back-to-back non-elimination episodes, as 14 fierce queens compete for the crown of America’s Next Drag Superstar and a $200,000 cash prize. The star-studded lineup of guest judges includes Doechii, Sandra Bernhard, Julia Schlaepfer, Paul W. Downs, Hunter Schafer, Quinta Brunson, Jamal Sims, Law Roach, Adam Lambert, Betsey Johnson, Whitney Cummings, Sam Smith, Jerrod Carmichael, June Diane Raphael, and Tracee Ellis Ross.
“… this season for the first time, I feel we have like drag race fans who are actually like on the show,” Lana Ja’Rae told EUR exclusively. “So it’s like, we know what the fans are going to want to see because we have been in their positions before. It’s like the best drag race season ever!”
With a fierce and diverse cast of queens including Acacia Forgot, Arrietty, Crystal Envy, and more, Drag Race fans are in for a wild ride.
Onya, Kori, and Joella described the cast as “catty” but “very sickening” and “very fierce.” Watch the Season 17 trailer below.
“I feel like there was a lot of different types of drag this season, and that really got the girls going,” the queens said.
The trio also noted that with so “many different types of drag” this season, “there was a lot of tension sometimes,” which is expected “with every type of competition.”
“I think we’re getting to the point where the people that go on Drag Race have grown up watching Drag Race,” said Kori King. “So now we’re like children of people that are already doing it. So at this point, I feel like this season is very meta… this season is going to break the fourth wall. I feel like we are all very self-aware of the beast that is Drag Race, and it’s going to make it for a much more entertaining season.”
