*Ice Cube has finally secured a deal to revive the beloved “Friday” franchise, marking the return of the iconic comedy series after over 20 years.
The rapper-actor-filmmaker will write and star in “Last Friday,” the highly anticipated fourth chapter, following an agreement with Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, Hot97 reports. This development, confirmed by New Line president and CCO Richard Brener in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, is a significant win for Ice Cube, who has long championed the idea of bringing the series back to the big screen.
The journey to “Last Friday” has been years in the making, with Ice Cube dropping hints of progress along the way. Last June, he shared an update on Flavor Flav’s SiriusXM show, Flavor of the Week, saying, “They have new leadership: my man Mike De Luca, who used to be at New Line when I first started, when I first did the first Friday and Players Club and All About the Benjamins. Mike De Luca was there.”
In 2022, Ice Cube opened up about his struggles with Warner Bros. on Mike Tyson’s Hotboxin’ podcast, revealing the studio’s reluctance to relinquish control of the franchise.

“I don’t know. Warner Bros. is weird right now,” he said at the time about the status of Last Friday. “I don’t know what they’re doing. They don’t know what they’re doing. We’d love to have it back. I think it’s going be close to a time when we get it back. So, we’ll either wait for that time, or we’ll keep trying to convince them that they need to let us control the movie. It’s my movie, but they have distribution control.”
His persistence has now paid off, with the green light for him to not only star in but also direct Last Friday.
The “Friday” series kicked off in 1995 with the original film, co-written by Ice Cube and DJ Pooh, and continued with “Next Friday” (2000) and “Friday After Next” (2002), both penned solely by Cube. The trilogy, developed under New Line Cinema, became a cultural touchstone. After Warner Bros. took over New Line, the franchise fell under their umbrella, setting the stage for this long-awaited reunion of Cube and De Luca.
Details about the plot, release date, and full cast of the new film have not yet been disclosed.
