*Chris Brown is taking legal action in response to the recent docuseries “A History of Violence.”
The singer filed a $500 million defamation lawsuit against the creators behind the Investigation Discovery series, including Warner Bros. Discovery and Ample Entertainment. Brown accuses them of knowingly “promoting and publishing false information in the pursuit of likes, clicks, downloads, and dollars,” Variety reports, citing court docs.
The documentary titled “Chris Brown: A History of Violence” debuted late last year, and unpacks Brown’s history of sexual violence against women. The project features an anonymous accuser and commentary on the psychological effects of abuse.
“With expert and cultural commentary layered throughout, the documentary provides thoughtful reflections into each survivor’s experience and the psychological destruction in the aftermath of their abuse,” the film’s producers said in a statement.
The documentary premiere was followed by a panel discussion on domestic violence hosted by Sunny Hostin of “The View.”
According to Brown’s lawsuit, the doc is “full of lies and deception.”
Brown shared a press release on Instagram detailing his lawsuit. His attorney, Levi McCathern, said the defamation case is “about protecting the truth.”
“This case is about protecting the truth,” McCathern said. “Despite being provided with evidence disproving their claims, the producers of this documentary intentionally promoted false and defamatory information, knowingly disregarding their ethical obligations as journalists. Their actions undermine not only Mr. Brown’s decade-long efforts to rebuild his life but also the credibility of true survivors of violence.”
Brown’s legal team acknowledges his past mistakes, which he discussed in his 2017 documentary. However, they argue that he has grown since then and claim the recent docuseries involved in the lawsuit is based on false information.
A portion of the $500 million sought in the lawsuit will be directed to survivors of sexual abuse, according to McCathern.
