Residents and supporters are turning to social media to share the devastating impact of the uncontrolled fire, which has ravaged parts of Los Angeles County, including Pasadena and the Los Angeles National Forest. The multiple wildfires, fueled by strong Santa Ana winds, have left many homeless and in desperate need of help.
MadameNoire reports that Altadena, home to an 18% Black population, has been especially hard hit, with many residents facing the loss of homes and businesses, passed down through generations, representing a deep sense of history and identity. To support those affected, a GoFundMe campaign titled “LA Fires: The Impacted Black Community Urgently Needs Help!” has been launched in partnership with major African American law firms and local organizations, with 100% of funds going directly to those in need.
The Palisades Fire, the largest wildfire currently burning, has scorched over 23,000 acres and is only 18% contained, posing a threat to Brentwood, Encino, and Westwood, NBC News reports.
Evacuation orders are in place for 88,000 Los Angeles residents, with an additional 89,000 under evacuation warnings, requiring them to be ready to evacuate at any time.
