*Decades after her death, Aaliyah remains firmly in the hearts and minds of fans and family. As with any music legend that leaves us too early, conversations are always held as to how that artist would be if she were still here.
Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, is no exception as he provided his take on his sister’s status and where her career would be in this day and time.
“If she were here today, she would be the biggest star in the world,” he told People on what would have been Aaliyah’s 46th birthday, Jan. 16. “Her legacy continues on. So we can imagine, we can dream, but we still have all those incredible works that she did do.”
There’s no question, Aaliyah would be more of a legend than she already is. But Haughton reflects more on his late sister’s inner self, particularly Aaliyah’s warmth and compassion, which feels left a lasting impression on those she met during her life.
“My sister, although she worked so hard, she always was loving and caring to the people around her—her makeup artists, the managers,” Haughton remembered. “A lot of times, because we go through so much in this world… a lot of people are suffering, the main thing is you have to smile through the pain, smile through the challenges and hug people. I think when people talk about my sister, the number one thing was that she was such a loving and caring person.”

Haughton’s remarks come after Aaliyah was recently honored with her own limited-edition Barbie Doll by Mattel, years after she was tragically killed in a plane crash in 2001.
The doll, which takes fashion inspiration from the 1996 music video for her classic hit “One in a Million,” sports a black faux leather ensemble, dark shades, and her signature swooped hairstyle.
Although it sold out in pre-sales, there is another chance for fans to buy the Aaliyah Barbie doll it when it restocks at Target on Jan. 26 for $55 USD, Vibe notes.
To hear Haughton tell it, Aaliyah would be among those enjoying the doll without any hesitation.
“I can see her playing with these dolls wherever she is right now, which I know is heaven and in a beautiful place,” he said. “And she’s going to have a doll with her, and be doing all the dance moves from ‘One in a Million’ with it.”
