* Wendy Williams’ medical care team has announced that she was diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia (FTD).
“Wendy is still able to do many things for herself,” the team said, People reports. “Most importantly she maintains her trademark sense of humor and is receiving the care she requires to make sure she is protected and that her needs are addressed. She is appreciative of the many kind thoughts and good wishes being sent her way.”
According to a press release, Williams, 59, was officially diagnosed last year. She has been contending with various other health challenges, including Graves’ disease, lymphedema, and alcohol abuse.
The Mayo Clinic reports that aphasia “typically occurs suddenly after a stroke or a head injury. But it can also come on gradually from a slow-growing brain tumor or a disease that causes progressive, permanent damage (degenerative).”
Per the release, “Aphasia, a condition affecting language and communication abilities, and frontotemporal dementia, a progressive disorder impacting behavior and cognitive functions, have already presented significant hurdles in Wendy’s life.”
As People reports, FTD stands as the most prevalent form of dementia among individuals under 60. Symptoms typically begin between 40 – 65 years of age, although it can impact younger people.
Family members of Williams told People that she is “in a wellness, healing type of environment” to address her cognitive issues.
“I spoke with her yesterday and I speak with her very regularly when she reaches out to me. She is, from what I understand, in a wellness, healing type of environment,” Wendy’s sister, Wanda Finnie, said.
“We cannot reach out to her, but she can reach out to us. And she is in a healing place emotionally. She’s not the person you see in this film,” she added, referring to the upcoming raw and compelling Lifetime documentary.
In April 2023, Williams entered a facility to address “cognitive issues” and was appointed a court-appointed legal guardian, according to People.
