THC Detection in Body Fluids Not Linked to Impairment

NBA Reverses Marijuana Ban
Girl Scout Cookies or “GSC” is a hybrid strain of marijuana that is fairly potent and is used for some medical patients. GSC is a favorite among cannabis users.

*A literature review published in the Journal of AOAC (the Association of Official Analytical Chemists) International concludes that THC or its metabolites in blood, breath, urine, or saliva does not reliably predict behavioral impairment.

Researchers associated with the University of California at Davis confirmed that there is “no direct correlation between impairment and THC concentrations” in bodily fluids. This conclusion aligns with the viewpoints of various traffic safety organizations, including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the American Automobile Association.

“Current methods that focus on THC and/or metabolite concentrations in blood, saliva, urine, or exhaled breath can lead to false-positive results for recent use due to the persistence of THC well outside of the typical 3-4-hour window of potential impairment following cannabis inhalation,” the researchers noted.

The authors of the study concluded that traffic safety laws in states that criminalize drivers testing positive for minimal THC levels in their blood are “not scientifically supported.” Such laws pose the risk of unjustly incriminating drivers who are neither impaired nor have recently used cannabis.
