*NBA superstar Stephen Curry is in Paris with Team USA, working on bringing home the gold – but fans will also have the opportunity to watch him step into the acting arena with the new Peacock comedy series “Mr. Throwback.“
Presented in a sports doc mockumentary style, the series centers around a vintage sportswear dealer in a sticky situation who leans on his childhood friend, played by Curry, to save the day.
In an exclusive interview with EUR, Ego Nwodim (Saturday Night Live), who stars alongside Curry, delves into her role as Kimberly, Curry’s right-hand woman in the series.
Inspired by the Warrior’s star’s real-life assistant named Tiffany, Kimberly is described as a tough yet compassionate character, meticulously managing Curry’s chaotic life. Kimberly is also a childhood friend of Curry and runs his “Curry Up and Wait Productions.”
“Kimberly handles all his operations, ensuring everything is in order, from scheduling to ensuring he’s where he needs to be,” shared Nwodim. “She’s based on a real person in Stephen’s life, and she’s just incredible. Kimberly is hard, but she also has a heart, and we get to see that through the series.”
Nwodim reveals that Kimberly’s character brings a depth that resonates with many professional women balancing demanding careers and personal lives.
“Kimberly alludes to having to come at people harder because they expect her to be soft just because she’s a woman. She asserts her worth and place in this male-dominated space, which is a special thing about her,” explained Nwodim. The series also explores Kimberly’s internal struggles, highlighting how her dedication to managing Curry’s life takes a toll on her own. “Managing someone else’s turbulent life impacts hers, and she realizes what she’s losing by pouring everything into someone else’s world.”
Working closely with Curry, who makes his official acting debut, Nwodim described the experience as unique and rewarding.
“Stephen was the rookie on set, which was a new experience for him. I had worked with him on a sketch for the ESPYs, so we had that initial connection. On set, he was incredibly humble, acknowledging his rookie status, but he quickly got the hang of things. He got it quickly. He was prepared, off-book, and handled it all like a pro. His skills from basketball—staying grounded and being present—translated well to acting. He ran lines with his kids, and that preparation gave him the confidence and freedom to play on set,” she shared.
The improvisational aspect of “Mr. Throwback” added an extra layer of authenticity to the show.
“The director and creators allowed us the freedom to improvise, which made the show feel grounded and real. We had an amazing script, but that improv was the secret sauce that made it special,” Nwodim said.
As for Nwodim’s basketball loyalties?
“I feel like I do have to be a Warriors fan now. I went to Stephen’s shooting practice at their old training facility. He’s my co-star, and it’s my second time working with him, so it’s high time. But I’m also rooting for the Knicks and the Nets on the East Coast. It’s all about balance!”
Created by the minds behind “Happy Endings,” David Caspe, and Daniel and Matthew Libman, the series also stars Adam Pally. “Mr. Throwback” is set to premiere on August 8 on Peacock.
